Voice over IP (VoIP)

Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology that allows for the carriage of voice traffic (telephone calls) using a data or computer network. Carrying calls using a next generation data network rather than a tradition voice network has a twofold advantage - highly advanced and flexible features and greatly reduced costs.

VoIP technology is completely reworking large and small telephone systems around the world.

How it works:
VoIP converts voice signals from your telephone into digital signals in the form of data packets. These data packets can then be transmitted from one end of the data network to the other. At the receiving end, data packets are converted back to voice signals.

This technology has been used for many years by telecommunications carriers to carry their long-distance voice traffic. Now, thanks to high speed broadband data services, end users can take advantage of this ground breaking technology.

Key ways cost savings are being achieved using VoIP:
Convergence of data and voice networks - Because voice over IP uses your existing data network to carry voice traffic, you no longer have to manage separate networks for voice and data communications. Voice essentially becomes just another application on the data network just like email or the web. This greatly reduces both infrastructure and management costs.
MACs (Moves, Adds, Changes) - With standard PABX systems you need to employ specialised telephone system personnel each time you need to move, add or change to a telephone extension. VoIP PABX systems allow you to simply unplug a handset and plug it back in anywhere on the network without any reconfiguration. The telephone system can also be managed by IT staff just like any other server on the network.
Call rates - VoIP frees you from the incumbent telecommunications carriers who hold a monopoly on the standard telecommunications infrastructure. This gives you access to call rates that are far more aggressive.
Free interoffice calls - If you have multiple sites throughout Australia or even overseas, you are able to make calls between these locations free using VoIP. This feature alone has saced many of our customers as much as 90% on their overall telecommunications spend.

Advanced features:
Roaming - VoIP allows you to take your handset anywhere, plug it in and be automatically connected to the corporate telephone system even from home or a hotel room. This enhanced mobility is a great news for teleworkers and businesses who wish to decentralise their operations.
Application integration - VoIP "computerises" voice communications. It therefore becomes easy to bridge the gap between data and voice applications. Features such as address book dialing and email/voicemail integration come standard. More advanced applications such as CRM and corporate databases can also be tied into a VoIP telephone system, increasing workflow efficiency.
Centralised Management - VoIP essentially turns voice into an application on the data network. This means that VoIP servers can be located anywhere and managed remotely. The VoIP server could even hosted by a third party. This helps greatly reduce the management costs associated with standard telephony systems.
